News And Rumors

Well, with the spring time weather starting to come around to many areas it seems that news and rumors are springing up with the grass! Here are some of the latest tidbits that I have heard out on the wires……

Specialized Carbon Hardtail 29″er: A reader of Twenty Nine Inches was kind enough to forward these spy shots taken at a California race venue recently showing a Specialized carbon fiber hardtail mountain bike sporting 29 inch wheels. Nothing more can be said for certain, but several things stand out upon examination here.

The head tube bears a striking resemblance to the tapered steer tube road models, as does the entire frame with its gracefully curving top tube flowing into the seat stays. One can only surmise that we are seeing a tapered steer tube fork here that bears some resemblance to a Fox fork. Interestingly the bike is leaned against the trailer on the drive side, but that crank bears a striking resemblance to Specialized’s two piece FACT carbon crank.

When we asked Specialized for a response, all they said was “…good catch.” We did learn that there is a “mini-launch” of some bicycles just prior to Sea Otter planned by Specialized and no doubt the new rigs will be on display at the Specialized Team truck at Sea Otter, so we plan on catching up with this new rig at that time.

GEAX Tubular Saguaro Under Development: The GEAX tubular tire development continues and here we have our first photo of a prototype 29″er tubular next to a 26 inch version. GEAX is working very closely with Edge Composites on making sure that these tires and Edge’s rims work in perfect harmony with each other. Expect to see some prototypes being raced at certain venues throughout the summer. The tire is not expected to be anywhere close to being ready for sale to the public until maybe mid-2010 at this point.

Titanium Bike Cancelled: We have been saying for months that a titanium hardtail was scheduled to be released for sale by a U.S. based company in a 29″er format but that bike has been scuttled now. There are no plans to bring it to production. Reasons for the snuffing of the project were mostly related to the downturn in the economy late last year and a hesitancy by dealers to commit to such a pricey, niche market frame.

Fox Does QR15 29″er Forks For 2010 We have had confirmation that Fox Racing Shox is bringing the QR15 through axle to market in 2010 for 29″ers. No word on travel options or models as of now. This isn’t surprising, as to not bring a through axle fork into the 29″er range would be suicidal for Fox’s 29″er sales. We’ll be peeking around the pits at Sea Otter to see if we can spot some early production models. Fox has sprinkled future product around at Sea Otter before, and this year should be no exception.

Giant 29″er Update: Giant has updated it’s Facebook page to include this sneak peek at it’s up coming 29″er hardtail. Looks like Alliance technology which is a mix of carbon top tube/seat stays with hydro formed aluminum down tube, head tube, seat tube, and chainstays. The frame appears to have replaceable drop outs lending to the theory that this will be a single speed capable frame. There was a mention of belt drive by a commenter associated with Giant, but this is unconfirmed at this time. Stay tuned for more as we learn it.

    ooooh…I like the Giant frame.

    grannygear

  2. arracer Says:

thats definitely a specialized crank as is the fork
very similar to their proprietary stuff used on the sworks mountain line

  3. jay Says:

I would imagine the fork on the carbon specialized 29er would be a version of the Specialized Future Shock S90, specially designed for the 29″ format, at least thats what the photo looks like. Specialized is big on total suspension integration. Ppersonally i cant wait. my current rockhopper 29er frame is just fine, but we all need more carbon in our diet!

  4. agu Says:

No doubt that Giant frame looks good. Seat tube looks to have a slight bend in it.

As they say around here, the more, the many-er! heheh

  5. AC Says:

Ah! that Spec is hot! I love the look of that curved TT.

I’ll be at Sea Otter this year…

  6. Thunderlump Says:

Things I immediatly like about the specialized are thats a 1.5 bottom 1 1/8th integrated headset which should be a nice improvement to 29er geometry. Plus the BB30 S works cranks ….sick!

Cant wait to see this one in person.

  7. Big T Says:

    Mark –

That fork on the Specialized bike is just a Reba Team with a tapered steerer option. Look closely at the legs, and the top caps for the controls on the crown.

  8. Dirt McGirt Says:

Dammit. That Giant frame looks nice…. I’m supposed to hate Giants…… Dammit….

  9. Dirt McGirt Says:

That is a FutureShock on the front of that Speccy, too…..

They look an awful lot like RS, though.

  10. trail'R trash Says:

    More pix here: http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.php?t=504896

Fork is a Rock Shox, not Spec.

How does 1.5 lower HS bearing help the 29er geometry? If everything is designed correctly, it doesn’t change the geometry at all. Just makes the fork heavier.

  11. Clint Says:

What’s great is that a couple years ago I heard from a Giant rep that Giant had no interest perusing a 29er because it was a fad that would pass. I guess that didn’t happen for them. More options for us I guess.

  12. Nick Says:

Has anyone heard any Cannondale rumors lately? Its been a while since the last 29er FS gossip.

  13. Davidcopperfield Says:

We need tapered head tubes, 20mmQR and light rear 12mm TA like 40-50 grams, titanium? Pivot bring 529 and Giant Trance and reign. Let’s make a quantum leaps not just tiny tiptoes. We need some earth shuttering news.

  14. Dirt McGirt Says:

Uh oh… don’t get me started on Cannondales…. GT doesn’t like it when I get started on Cannondales……

  15. jeronimo Says:

Specialized poo-pooed 29ers for several years…and now everyone salivates over them? Why bother?

    Aluminum and carbon…snore.

When is Jenson releasing their updated 737?

  16. Nick Says:

    DMG… then don’t

  17. Guitar Ted Says:

Nick: I have not heard any specific Cannondale rumors.

jeronimo: As far as I am aware, Jenson U.S.A. is done with the steel Zions.

  18. SteveK Says:

Is that a 29’er Epic in the background? The chainstays look different than the 26″ version.

  19. jc Says:

“Nice Catch”?? There were no less than 5 of those things at both Bonelli and Fontana. Plus, Todd Wells was racing one. Whatever….

And they ARE Reba’s on the Specialized’s. They have a proprietary crown and steerer, but just run-of-the-mill Reba’s.
