Orbea To Unveil First Carbon 29er

January 31, 2006

From an Orbea USA Press Release:

Orbea USA is blazing new trails in the mountain bike world with the introduction of the world’s first carbon monocoque 29-inch mountain bike. It is the most advanced big wheel bike ever made. It is a bike with soul.

“With the introduction of the Alma 29 we are making our mark on the US mountain bike market. We wanted to create a bike unlike anything else. You get the benefit of the bigger wheels, but it steers quickly, is ultra-stable and is an unbelievable climber,” said Tony Karklins, Orbea USA’s managing director.

29" Redline Monocog Upgrades?

January 30, 2006

I’m thinking about getting a Redline Monocog 29er when they’re available. Can I make this bike into a 1×8 or a 1×9? What kind of upgrades are possible with this bike?

The Crow 29er Tires

January 24, 2006

I got some more concrete info on the new 29″ tires from NoTubes. The Crow’s original due date was this month, however it’s been pushed back indefinitely.

Here’s some more stats for you:

  • Pre-production weight was right at 500 grams
  • has a proprietary feature that makes the folding beads 20% stronger then anything else currently on the market
  • features on the production run will make the tires easier to inflate and seal
  • shorter tread design

Here’s the picture I was sent and it’s on the NoTubes’ new ZTR 355 29er rim.

New 29" tires?

January 23, 2006

I got a tip in my inbox today saying Stan’s NoTubes has come out with a new set of 29″ tires called “The Crow”. I’m still tracking down more info, but this is what a TwentyNineInches.com reader sent me so far…

No Tubes The Crow Tire. Features Semi-slick design, dual compound rubber, and extra strong folding bead.

  • Semi-slick design is fast-rolling and cuts down on wind resistance
  • Dual compound rubber has harder, faster rolling center and softer sides for better grip while cornering
  • Requires sealant to run tubeless
  • Folding bead is extra strong to keep the tire seated in the rim

Tire Use: Mountain
Color Tread/Side: Black/Black
Tire Type: UST Tubeless
Tire Diameter: 29″
ISO Width: 50 mm
ISO Diameter: 622
Tire Bead: Folding
PSI: 20 – 40 PSI
Weight: 500.0 g

They’re not on the website yet and apparantly they aren’t in stock either. Anybody heard anything else?

Thanks to Eddie for the tip!

Gary Fisher Supercaliber 29er Mockup Image

January 20, 2006

UPDATE: As Guitar Ted commented and the FisherGuy corrected in the original post… the pic is of the 26″ design. Hopefully the 29″ image will follow shortly.

Ryan Atkinson, the “Fisher Guy”, posted over at the MTBR forums a drawn up image of what the Supercaliber 29er is gonna look like.

I’m working my contact over from Fisher to see if I can get some real pictures of it. Hopefully soon.

Redline Monocog 29 date?

January 12, 2006

Between my LBS telling me they can now order them from Redline and the rumor I’ve been hearing that the Monocog 29er is supposed to be here by the end of January, I had high hopes for these being available pretty soon.

However, I called my contact at Redline and he’s still saying early to mid March is the due date.

Anybody else hearing anything different?

Specialized 29er Tires Sold Out

January 11, 2006

I talked to my guy at Specialized today and he said the first run of the Fast Trak 29 inch tires “sold out rapidly” and it’ll be 6 to 8 weeks before they get another shipment in.

Hopefully this’ll help convince them there’s a market for a Specialized 29er bike.
